Usually a site will stop the growth of the number. But not so with the site that was founded by Mark Zuckerberg is. The case for Facebook, they still have the impressive growth.

Apple iPhone 3G

The iPhone 3G is the beginning of a new computing platform. With 3G and the App Store, the best iPod ever is now one of the best handheld computers ever. We struggled with a bunch of day-one bugs, but we're confident that Apple will work them out. Oh, and it's finally a decent phone, too.

Over the past year or so, Apple has made a subtle shift from developing products to building platforms, and it's a move we applaud. Products are disposable. Platforms grow. We witnessed the shift in the last update to the Apple TV, which gave an old box new features. You saw it when Apple made the iPhone 2.0 software available to original iPhone and iPod Touch owners, as well as to the new iPhone 3G users.
Buzz up!on Yahoo!

While not a huge physical upgrade over the original iPhone, the 3G hits two of the older model's critical weaknesses—poor phone call quality and slow Internet connection speeds—and makes it clear that the iPhone is now a platform, a pocket computer that software developers can empower to do anything its users want. It's a formidable smartphone (though not without weaknesses), a heck of a lot of fun to use, and a device that will grow with you.

What Hasn't Changed Much

By and large, the 3G looks, feels, and acts like an iPhone. It's still a big slab of touch screen with a single Home button. The display is the same 3.5-inch 320x480-pixel panel with multi-touch capabilities, but it's a little bit brighter than the previous iPhone's screen. There's a slightly thinner metal bezel around the screen and the back of the handset is plastic rather than metal. It's also slightly rounded; the iPhone wobbles a little on a table if you push on its edges. The plastic back attracts fingerprints like nobody's business. A new metal grill over the earpiece and speakers helps improve the sound quality. And thank goodness, the 3G eschews the recessed headphone jack for a regular one that accepts ordinary, run-of-the-mill music headphones.

You still enter data on a touch keyboard that corrects your spelling, but still doesn't offer force feedback. That turns a lot of people off, but it's still one of the two best touch keyboards in the business (along with the LG Dare's.) The keyboard still rotates into wide mode for entering URLs, but not for typing text or e-mail messages.

The basic array of iPhone applications hasn't changed much. There's the Phone, iPod, iTunes, Safari, YouTube, Mail, Text (threaded SMS), Calendar, Camera, Photos, Stocks, Maps, Weather, Clock, Calculator, Notes, and Settings. Now there's a dedicated icon for Contacts and the App store. (For more on the App Store, see below.)

You still have to click a whole bunch of times to dial the phone. You can still pinch, spread your fingers, and drag them across the screen to manipulate pictures. Apple's Safari browser remains untouched, showing Web pages with beautiful desktop fidelity, but without Flash or Java.

The phone comes in 8GB (black) and 16GB (black and white) sizes, neither with a removable memory card slot. The iPhone's disappointing 2-megapixel camera, with absolutely no settings options (including no video recording) sadly hasn't changed; our 3G pictures looked identical to our 2G shots, though the 3G ones came tagged with GPS data. And there's no picture messaging to other phones (MMS), no removable battery, and you can't cut and paste text.

Battery life is a bright spot here. We got 5 hours, 43 minutes of talk time, which is very good for a 3G phone. Audio and video playback came in at an impressive 37 hours, 30 minutes for music and 7 hours, 53 minutes for video. We also streamed data continuously over 3G to simulate heavy use, and we achieved 4 hours, 45 minutes of use in.

Here's a funny thing about the iPhone, though. Those battery results are very good, but you may still feel that your iPhone has short battery life. That's because people use their iPhones much more than they do other devices. Rest assured, though, that the battery is as good as it could be given the current state of the technology.

Introducing Intel CMPC Third Generation

JAKARTA - the world's largest chip producer Intel Corp. introduced the third generation netbook (notebookmini) segment of education Classmate PC (CMPC). Intel revealed, CMPC third generation to become more functional and resistant rock than the previous generation.

CMPC is a netbook designed for children. In the latest generation of CMPC, Intel changed the design of the clamshell to be convertible. This means, CMPC generation can be operated as a traditional notebook and the withdrawal could also operated a PC (personal computer) tablets. CMPC has a number of the latest identity tablet PC, touch screen, among others.
Touch screen can be rotated 180 degrees and then folded to cover the keyboard so that it becomes CMPC tablet PC. When CMPC has turned into a PC tablet, then the children can write on the screen with the stylus, such as writing books on the course. CMPC also features third-generation webcam that can be played-play so that children can do video conferencing.

Because designed for children, who tend to be careless, the latest construction CMPC also strengthened. Among other things, the use netbook resistance of the body shell, water spill-resistant keyboard, touch screen and the pressure of a hand-resistant children. Intel said, the performance computing CMPC third generation has also increased because the Atom processor, the processor that is designed specifically for the netbook.

That way, the performance of third-generation computing CMPC is expected to be equal with the netbook in general, so that children become more productive in the study.

"Education is one of the best ways to improve the future of the individual, village, or the country," a General Manager Emerging Markets Platform Group Intel Corp. Lila Ibrahim, a developing third-generation design CMPC. Lila added, the world currently has 1.3 billion school-age children.

Among them, only 5 percent have access to a PC or the Internet. Lila assert, industry, information technology (IT) has a responsibility to improve student learning and life. CMPC is not the only initiative for education cheap PC.

PC education initiatives indeed appear in 2005 when former Chairman of Media Lab of Massachusetts Institute of Technology Nicholas Negroponte has radical ideas to produce valuable USD100 notebook in order to remove the digital gap in the poorest countries.

Negroponte and the OLPC foundation founded (One Laptop Per Child) and successfully produce OLPC XO tiny notebook, which has a screen measuring 7.5 inches. Tiny notebook that can operate despite the price bounced over a few times of the early target. XO production processors using Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (AMD), the main competitor Intel processors in the industry.

Intel actually had its own support OLPC. Intel joined the OLPC in July 2007. However, in January 2008, Intel attract support for the OLPC because OLPC stop forcing Intel CMPC program. Negroponte own states, resignation Intel's OLPC will not disrupt the OLPC effort to find buyers. Negroponte even assert, resignation Intel will make OLPC better.

"This will restore momentum. We previously thought are broken pieces," said Negroponte. But abandoned after Intel, the problem appeared to be on the OLPC complex. In May 2008 when the OLPC split split second highest leader in the OLPC resigned from the foundation.

He is Walter Bender, who helps Negroponte founded OLPC. Bender is the task of developing software and content production for the OLPC XO notebook. Bender prefer using open source software (OSS) in the XO with reason OSS can significantly cut the price notebookXO.

Once abandoned Intel, OLPC is more pragmatic step. They also began to establish cooperation with the world's largest software manufacturer Microsoft Corp. to support technology and funds. Microsoft also set up Windows XP for XO.

Intel Cuts Core 2 Quad Prices Up to 40 Percent

On Sunday, Intel cut the prices of its Core 2 Quad chips by up to 40 percent, scattering price drops along its other product lines, as well.

All told, the desktop Core 2 Quad processor, Intel's mobile Celeron chips, as well as single-processor Xeon chips all received price cuts.

For most, however, the Core 2 Quad price decreases were the most significant. The prices not only dropped the Core 2 Quad into a more competitive position with AMD, but also shook up Intel's price-performance hierarchy.

For example, Intel's fastest Q9650 (3.0-GHz, 12 Mbytes L2 cache) is now priced at $316, down 40 percent from $530. That means that Intel's Q9550s, a 2.83-GHz chip with 12-Mbytes of cache, is now a more expensive $369. The Q9550s, however, is also rated at a lower-power 65 watts, rather than the 95-watt envelope that the Q9650 uses, or the Q9550, which also received a more modest 16 percent cut to $266.

Intel's price cuts mean that Intel's Q9650 now commands just less than a 15 percent premium over the AMD Phenom II X4 940 "Black Edition", an unlocked part, and AMD's only processor that runs at 3.0 GHz. AMD's Phenom X4 9950 Black Edition (2.6 GHz, 2.0-Mbytes L2 cache/2.0-Mbytes L3 cache), its most expensive Phenom X4 part, is priced at $174, an 82 percent discount from the Q9650.

Intel's Q9400 (2.66-GHz, 6 Mbytes L3 cache) was cut 20 percent from $266 to $213, while the Q8300 (2.5-GHz, 4-Gbytes L2 cache) was redcued 18 percent to $183. Finally, the Q8200 (2.33-GHz, 4 Mbytes L2 cache) was trimmed by 16 percent to $163.

Other desktop processors received scattered cuts: the E7400 Core 2 Duo processor, which was reduced 15 percent to $113; and the E5300 (2.60-GHz, 2 Mbytes L2 cache, 45-nm process), the E5200 (2.5-GHz, 2 Mbytes L2 cache, 45 nm) and the E2220 (2.4-GHz, 1 Mbytes L2 cache, 65-nm) which received cuts of 14 to 24 percent to $74, $64, and $64, respectively. The 2.0-GHz E1400 Celeron processor is now priced at $43, down from $53.

Bargain notebook shoppers also received some heartening news: Intel's mobile Celeron category also received some steep cuts, on the order of 19 percent to 48 percent. After the fall, Intel has priced the entire category at either $70 or $86; speeds range from 2.66-GHz (with a 667-MHz front-side bus) down to 1.73-GHz, with a 533-MHz FSB.

Intel's highest-performance single-processor Xeon line also received discounts. The X3370, X3360, X3350, and X3330 all received discounts, meaning that buyers can now purchase the 3.0-GHz/ 12-Mbyte L2 cache X3370 for $316, down 40 percent. The other three chips all received cuts of 16 percent.

Apple May Face Lawsuits Over Jobs' Health

Apple may be sued by investors after chief executive Steve Jobs unexpectedly stepped down for medical reasons until June, legal experts said Wednesday. But the law in this area is murky, and it's unclear what Apple's responsibilities will be or should have been.
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Apple probably will be sued by investors unhappy with the company's about-face on the health of its visionary chief executive, but the law is not clear on what duty the company has to disclose personal medical information, legal experts said on Wednesday.

Apple said CEO Steve Jobs, 53, will take a medical leave of absence until June. The announcement that comes just nine days after the pancreatic cancer survivor downplayed investor concerns about his dramatic weight loss in recent months, saying it was caused by an easily treatable hormone imbalance.

Analysts and investors complained that Apple was slow to disclose Jobs' true medical status and to form a succession plan after his 2004 cancer treatment because of his crucial role in vetting the company's forward-looking designs.

"It is a gray area because what is personal and what's a fiduciary responsibility?" Ashok Kumar, an analyst with investment banking firm Collins Stewart LLC, said. "Steve's presence at Apple probably carries significantly more weight than ... Michael Dell's presence at Dell."

The company's share price dropped as much as 10 percent on the announcement despite some analysts' belief that a potential Jobs health crisis was "baked in" to the price.

Although securities lawsuits usually arise from companies' false statements about material aspects of their businesses, Apple could run into trouble by falsely allaying investors concerns about whether Jobs would remain at its helm.

Plaintiffs and defense attorneys said this type of fraud allegation would be hard to prove and a first of its kind.

'THE MOST PRIVATE PART OF HIS LIFE'

"It is extremely difficult because it is the most private part of his life," Steve Williams, a plaintiffs attorney for Cotchett Pitre & McCarthy, said. "At the same time, Apple is Steve Jobs."

Former U.S. Securities and Exchange Commissioner Joseph Grundfest said Apple crossed no line if it failed to provide thorough disclosures about Jobs' health unless company insiders traded on the knowledge before it was disclosed publicly.

No securities rules and no legal precedents directly address CEO health but Grundfest acknowledged that investors could argue that Jobs' status as CEO was critical to their decision to invest in Apple.

"I never underestimate the cleverness of plaintiffs attorneys but I personally am aware of no theory that would support a filing of a case," Grundfest said.

Williams said, however, that Apple may have "minimized" Jobs' illness in the same way that pharmaceutical companies sometimes fail to promptly and thoroughly disclose how drugs are faring in government trials—a frequent lawsuit target.

"If the company misled me by giving me the impression that (Jobs) was going to continue to lead the company, that could be an actionable statement," Williams said.

But a defense attorney said investors probably would need a "smoking gun" to overcome the company's likely defense that Jobs' medical condition was constantly evolving.

"In the absence of some memo from a doctor that contradicts what he is saying, I would think it would be problematic for a plaintiffs (to sue for disclosure lapses)," said the attorney, who asked not to be named because his firm is litigating with Apple. "It is not the same as looking at a piece of financial information at the end of the month."

LG: LCD TV Prices Expected to Rise

The head of LG Display predicts that flat-panel makers will continue to suffer during the first quarter of 2009, but that prices have bottomed and are expected to rise. The company also plans to invest in a dedicated manufacturing line for mobile LCDs.

SEOUL (Reuters) - The liquid crystal display (LCD) industry has hit a bottom and TV panel prices are expected to recover in coming months on solid demand for small-sized flat screen TVs, the head of LG Display Co Ltd said.

Chief executive Kwon Young-soo also said high-end mobile display would be the new focus of the world's second-biggest LCD maker, which now mostly produces TVs, computer monitors and notebook panels.

South Korea-based LG Display reported on Friday its worst-ever quarterly loss, hit by $400 million U.S. price-fixing fines and falling screen prices.

LCD makers are likely to suffer further losses in the first half of 2009 as consumer demand for electronics declines rapidly on the deepening global downturn, analysts said.

But Kwon said prices were expected to recover soon.

"The good news is that we've reached a bottom," he told reporters at a news conference late on Friday for release on Sunday.

"TV panel prices will likely stop the downward trend and recover," Kwon said, adding demand is healthy for low-priced, small-size LCD sets that replace cathode ray tube models.

"Consumers are finding a flat-screen TV is worth the money if there were ever to spend on electronics goods, rather than, say, home appliances."

LG Display also said on Friday it would invest 577 billion won ($427 million) to build a new production line designed to produce premium LCD screens for mobile devices.

The new line, which uses LTPS (low temperature polysilicon) technology that produces higher-quality pictures, would help the company secure its foothold in the growing market for display for smartphones, Kwon said.

Key players in the mobile display market include Japan's Sharp Corp and South Korea's Samsung Mobile Display, formerly a part of Samsung SDI Co.

Meanwhile, Kwon expected LG Display to maintain its client base in the key China market despite Taiwanese rivals' move to increase their shares.

Taiwan's AU Optronics Corp and Chi Mei Optoelectronics Corp said on Friday they had signed strategic supply deals with Chinese TV makers.

Apple's Jobs to Step Down for Health Reasons

Apple chief executive Steve Jobs will step aside for medical reasons until the end of June, Jobs wrote in a letter to Apple employees on Wednesday.

Jobs said his decision was prompted by the medical condition he disclosed earlier in January, where a hormonal problem made it difficult for his body to process proteins.

"I am sure all of you saw my letter last week sharing something very personal with the Apple community," Jobs wrote. "Unfortunately, the curiosity over my personal health continues to be a distraction not only for me and my family, but everyone else at Apple as well. In addition, during the past week I have learned that my health-related issues are more complex than I originally thought.

"In order to take myself out of the limelight and focus on my health, and to allow everyone at Apple to focus on delivering extraordinary products, I have decided to take a medical leave of absence until the end of June," Jobs added.

If nothing else, the letter reveals who might be Jobs' successor, if he is forced to or chooses to eventually step down as chief executive: Tim Cook, the chief operating officer at Apple.

"I have asked Tim Cook to be responsible for Apple's day to day operations, and I know he and the rest of the executive management team will do a great job," Jobs concluded. "As CEO, I plan to remain involved in major strategic decisions while I am out. Our board of directors fully supports this plan."

System Buyers Guide: $1000 to $2000

As shown in our recent Entry-level Buyers' Guide, you can now build a decent entry-level PC for around $500 - including an LCD monitor and the Vista Home Premium OS. If you already have a monitor and OS, or use one of the free operating systems.like Ubunti or another Linux variant, you can get your desktop system cost down to about $300. We don't recall a time when so much power was available in the computer industry for so little money.

Of course that $500 machine, while surprisingly capable for basic computer tasks, is certainly not the paragon for gaming, graphics, or raw computing power. As you move up the price scale you gain in all of those parameters. We started to beef up those areas in the bargain systems and reached prices closer to $1000. The next ladder rung is broadly defined as midrange. Most of our readers are looking to buy in the midrange category, which generally provides the most performance for the dollar and computing solutions with some staying power in the market.

AMD Phenom II X4 940 & 920: A True Return to Competition

The AMD we used to know and love is back. As I write this sentence, most of AMD is still on vacation. By the time you read this, that will have changed, but it's such a stark contrast to what happened when the original Phenom processor launched. In the months leading up to Phenom, AMD treated it like it would be its hero. "Just wait", we were told. So we did. And Phenom was the biggest disappointment AMD had ever left us with.

AMD re-launched Phenom the following year, in 2008, with slightly better reception. The CPU evolved from something unsellable to an honest alternative to Intel's CPUs, just not one we'd recommend. Phenom ran too hot, didn't offer better performance, and offered some strange behavior with Cool'n'Quiet enabled.

300W to 450W: 20 Power Supplies on the Test Bench

Many of you have been waiting for us to review more low-wattage power supplies. We have written about power consumption several times in the past, and we have made it clear to AnandTech readers that in most cases there is no need for a high output power supply when 400W to 500W units will do just fine. We picked a collection of such units from high-end manufacturers throughout the market, and in fact we received so many power supplies that we had to split the roundup into two parts. The first part will contain power supplies rated at 300W to 450W while the second part will focus on 500W to 550W units.
